Construction Update: Medical and Graduate Education Building

The Medical and Graduate Education Building under construction at 104 Haven Ave. is on track to open in the summer of 2016. Monthly updates on construction are provided at the building’s website, www.educationbldg.cumc.columbia.edu/.

The final beams were placed on top of the building last October, completing the facility’s superstructure, and the building’s façade installation has continued over recent months.

The 14-story building will tower approximately 223 feet above ground. More than 100 contractors have been working on the building since late summer 2013.

The building will have 100,000 square feet of high-tech classroom facilities; an advanced simulation center; innovative learning spaces for both collaboration and quiet study; a new auditorium and event spaces with integrated technology; and lounges, a café, and a student commons area.

The space is being configured to allow optimal daylight into classroom and public spaces, and the building includes sustainable features that are intended to qualify the building for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification. Gold certification means the building has received between 39 and 51 points in six categories: sustainable sites (light pollution reduction, other pollution reduction, and conserving a site’s natural elements); water savings; energy and atmosphere; materials and resources; indoor environmental quality; and innovation and design process.
